I've been toying with the idea recently of offering my talents for commissions. I can't seem to motivate myself to draw as much as I feel I should, so perhaps the added incentive of money could get me into painting regularly. Plus one of the biggest stumbling blocks I run into when I do want to make art is not having any idea what I should do, commissions would solve that as well.
I've seen some surprisingly bad artists on deviantArt get some commissions, so I figure it's worth a shot.
So the question now is, would anyone even be interested in hiring me to make them something?
At this point I am not sure what I would charge, how the payments would be made (paypal?), when the payments would be made, or anything along those lines. I don't want anyone to feel they've been ripped off and I don't want to get ripped off.
I don't, as of yet, have any established rules regarding commissions but as a ground rule I will not do anything pornographic or sexually provocative. I will refuse commissions consisting of a subject matter or promoting an ideology that I feel uncomfortable with or morally opposed to. I'll probably refuse commissions that I just really don't want to do as well. I will try to be fair in my dealings but, as I've not done this before, it might be a bumpy road at first.

So my watchers and passerbys, reviewing my gallery, would you trust me with a commission? What are your thoughts on the idea? Please comment, start a discussion. Even if I do not reply to each comment I will have read them all.

Do you have any commissions now that you'd like to propose? Send me a message summarizing your idea and we can start a private dialog discussing the piece and its price.

What are your prices? You should list different examples of your work, at different levels of detail (i.e. sketch, line art, colored line art, full painting) and what each type's price is.

If I were to set up some different types of commissions I'd probably say:
Single subject (BW),
Single subject (Color),
Scene (BW),
Scene (Color).

As for the prices I still have no idea. A sketch would probably be very cheap, like $1.00 or something.
Perhaps a single subject would be around $5.00 and a scene around $12.00. I would charge more for colored images, but since I am still sort of new to color I probably wouldn't charge much more until I feel more comfortable with it. The prices would also change according to the commission. Subjects that seem extra difficult I may charge a little more. If someone is continually requesting changes to the image I may charge them a little more. Generally I don't want to charge very much until I am a bit more confident in my ability to fulfill commissions of a good quality in a timely manner.

Maybe I would start with prices as follows:
Sketch: $0.75
Single Subject (BW): $4.00
Single Subject (Color): $5.00
Scene (BW): $8.50
Scene (Color): $12.00

If a commission seemed quite simple I might charge less, if it seemed quite complicated I might charge more.
A Sketch would be little more than a monochromatic line drawing.
A Single Subject would be a fully rendered/shaded composition which would include a sketch or two as we tried to figure out what that composition would be.
A Scene would be the same as a Single Subject except it implies there would be a background and possibly several subjects and characters.

Does that sound fair to you?

Yeah, that sounds fair. I'm surprised you aren't getting more responses, though.

I think its because the majority of my watchers are there because of my freely provided pony mods. I don't know that I have very many watchers because of my art. Then I think the percentage of deviantArt users who would pay someone for a commission is likely very low. On top of that, I've not really stuck with one topic enough to attract some of the diehard fans for such a topic who are willing to pay. Those are my thoughts at least. 40 views, one commenter. Sounds about right.

What are you willing or not willing to draw?

I'll not be making anything that is intended to sexually arouse people. Nor will I venture into the realms of blasphemy, intense gore, or any other thing offensive to the spirit.
Other than that nothing currently comes to mind that I would explicitly prohibit.

Good to know.
